Suffering from love, feelings of loneliness or the sadness of life are universal themes recognised by everyone. Many songs sing of these feelings, the songs of the Romantic era are even known for them. But these feelings are of all times. Portuguese fado is steeped in them, and they keep recurring in our own language too, in life song, dutch pop or cabaret. Just think of Paul van Vliet's catchy A howl like a thunderstorm hangs in each of us. But when the crying fit is over and the thunderstorm is over, we can enjoy everything else in life too. And thank God there is nature!

In nature, you find shadows of stars that heal the heart, singing nightingales and roses, moments of contemplation and even wandering lights ... But whichever way you look at it, the great adventure of nature in which we encounter ourselves and the other will keep repeating itself and is thus an inexhaustible source for poets and composers. Where first there was neither finch nor nightingale, a proudly singing bird arose from the egg and everything will eventually become ‘Earth, and air, and rain’ again.

For this master class, we invite amateur duos (singer*es-pianist*e) to choose two songs from the repertoire list in which life in all its aspects is reflected, heightened, softened, healed, or put in a new light by nature. There will be three private master classes in which each duo will work on the chosen songs with vocal teacher Annelies van Gerven and pianist Lidwien Boumans. After the final master class, the presentation will take place on Saturday 23 May in the Small Hall.

Sign up as a duo (singer*es-pianist*e) by no later than Sunday 15 March send an e-mail to educatie@ilfz.nl. In this, mention which two songs you would like to work on, stating:

  • the title of the song
  • the name of the composer
  • and possibly the opus number.

Together, the songs should last a maximum of 9 minutes.

Please remember to include voice type, name and contact details (e-mail address and phone number) of both the singer*es and the pianist*es. Placement is in order of entry.

Annelies van Gerven / singing teacher
Annelies van Gerven studied singing at the Utrecht Conservatory. At the second International Song accompaniment Competition in 1988, she won the prize for best Dutch duo together with pianist Lidwien Boumans. For Annelies, teaching is a greater passion than being on stage herself. She teaches young and old in both musical and classical repertoire. At KunstenHuis Idea music department in Zeist, she led Het Zangtheater for almost thirty years. From September 2025, she gives private lessons for advanced singers and coaches ensembles. For her, there is nothing more fun than turning your hobby into your profession.

Lidwien Boumans / piano teacher
Lidwien Boumans studied piano at the Utrechts Conservatorium with Herman Uhlhorn and song accompaniment with Thom Bollen. With singer Annelies van Gerven, she won the prize for the best Dutch duo at the International Song Accompaniment Competition. She took singing lessons with Michel de Kort.
Boumans was correpetitor to Meinard Kraak, her great mentor and inspiration in poetry and music. She became a much sought-after song accompanist at concerts and competitions. She devised the Liedklas for amateur duos. In her own music company De Toetsenhoek, she teaches piano and coaches song duos. She also sings in Huis van de Weemoed Portuguese fado, translated by herself, and her own Dutch songs.
