Søren Kierkegaard said: 'Life is lived forward, but understood backwards.' And the same is true in music. Many great composers*es, whose names we still know today, were innovators. With their music, they turned their gaze forward. But sometimes there was no future for them and they had less opportunity to write innovative music. They died young, were women or homosexuals, or had to flee the ruling regime. By studying precisely their music, you can literally look from the past and present for a future that has music in it.

During this master class, you will explore songs by composers*es with little, or no, future prospects. By performing two of their 'hidden gems', we will give them a stage once again. These could be songs by composers and composers who fled from Germany or were banned by Nazi Germany, such as: Alma Mahler, Gustav Mahler, Felix Mendelssohn, Henriette Bosmans, Kurt Weill or Hanns Eisler. Or songs by female composers such as Liza Lehmann, Cécile Chaminade, Mélanie Bonis, Rebecca Clarke, or the sisters Lili and Nadia Boulanger. They did not always write easy music, but with beautiful sound worlds. For composers who had to leave their countries, you can think of George Enescu, Béla Bartók or Antonín Dvořák, for instance.

Manuela Ochakovski and Heleen Vegter invite you to search for 'hidden pearls' in the broadest sense of the word yourself, and think with you if you can't figure it out. The songs should not exceed 9 minutes together.

This masterclass for six advanced amateur singers will start on Friday 16 May with a private masterclass in which each participant will work on their chosen song repertoire, with teacher Heleen Vegter at the piano. On Saturday 17 May, you will work during a public master class led by singing teacher Manuela Okhakovsky. On Tuesday 20 May, you will conclude the masterclass with a presentation in the Small Hall of the Evangelical Brotherhood Church. You will name the title and composer and sing your 'hidden pearls', with Heleen Vegter at the piano.
