From about the middle of the 19th century, Western, classical music places a high value on originality and novelty. But how do we define new? And is something 'new' always something 'good'? Using current knowledge on climate change, it is interesting to explore whether and how sustainability also has value in music. Natasha Loges - musicologist and professor at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg and the Royal College of Music - is an expert on the combination of text and music in song and has written standard works on the subject. During her lecture, she explores non-Western art songs that can shed light on this. One could say that in these works musical material is 'recycled' and ideas that have undiminished relevance to human expression are reused. Loges says: 'Musical material consists of things like harmony, melody, rhythm and poetry, but it is musical aspects that are sometimes very challenging for 20th-century listeners. I am fascinated by innovation, but also understand listeners who love the familiar.'

Natasha Loges is an esteemed scholar of German song, gender, concert history, the relationships between text and music, and lives and works of Brahms and Robert and Clara Schumann. She holds her own chair at the Royal College of Music and is professor of musicology at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg. Her publications include a number of editions on Brahms' life and works. She is currently co-editor of three collections of essays on female pianists worldwide, among others, and is working on a biography on Pauline Viardot. Outside her academic activities, Loges can regularly be heard on BBC Radio 3 - including as a song pianist - , writes for the BBC Music Magazine and gives lectures.
