Saisoen? No, that's not a clerical error, but the 13th-century spelling of season. The Middle Dutch Dictionary defines it as: ‘a certain time of the year, season (...) especially with regard to what nature then produces or is good for the health of a person’. Even then, the seasons were seen as a mirror for how we experience time, experience change and illustrate our connection with nature. Spring stands for hope, love and joy, summer for warmth, light and vitality. But the carefree summer does not last forever. As soon as autumn makes its appearance, we are confronted with impermanence, melancholy and sadness. And when winter comes, and nature seems to stand still, there is room for reflection alongside deep melancholy, thankfully.

In which season does mankind feel most at home? Which season makes us feel most strongly the power of nature, which is always in motion? This master class invites you to sing about your favourite season with one or two songs of your choice.

In one private and two public masterclasses, you will work with Joost van der Linden, Gilbert den Broeder, or both on your chosen two songs. After the last master class, the presentation will take place. On Monday 18 May, you will conclude with a presentation in the Small Hall. You will introduce your own songs, briefly explain why they fit ‘your season’, and perform them with Gilbert den Broeder at the piano.

Sign up by no later than Sunday 15 March send an e-mail to educatie@ilfz.nl. In this, please include your name and phone number, your voice type and which two songs you would like to work on, stating:

  • the title of the song
  • the name of the composer
  • and possibly the opus number

Together, the songs should last a maximum of 9 minutes.

We would appreciate it if you send a recent audio recording along.

You will be notified in the week of 30 March whether you have been placed. If the maximum number of participants has been reached and there is still room at another master class or the Open Stage, we will contact you.

Joost van der Linden / singing teacher
Joost van der Linden studied at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and the Rotterdam Conservatoire and took master classes at the Britten-Pears School and The Samling Foundation, among others. As a soloist, he has been heard in oratorios from various style periods from Baroque to contemporary works. He has worked with leading conductors such as Ton Koopman, Philippe Herreweghe, Jane Glover and Jurjen Hempel. With his own ensemble SongCircle, he performed recitals for Friends of the Song. In his own practice, he teaches professional and amateur singers and coaches ensembles. Since 2014, he has been involved in the vocal workshop La Banda Bardi where he supports singers*essen in experimenting and interpreting poetry, rhythm, melody and harmony of often unknown repertoire.

Gilbert den Broeder / piano
Gilbert den Broeder is an inspired pianist with a keen ear for vocal expression and a great track record as an accompanist and coach of singers and opera stars. He studied piano at the Amsterdam Conservatory and specialised early on in accompanying and coaching vocalists - a profession he has mastered to perfection. For many years, Den Broeder was solo accompanist at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, where he worked with world-famous conductors. His musicality, astute coaching and infectious sense of humour make him popular with young talents and established names alike. Like no other, he knows how to get the best out of a voice and to empower people.
