During the master class, six singers*es will work on a Schubert song for which a version by another composer*e also exists on the same text. Examples include Goethe's poems, which prompted Schubert to compose the songs from Wilhelm Meister, but which were also set to music by others, such as Schumann, Wolf and Tchaikovsky. And so there are many more songs by Schubert that were set to music later - or sometimes at the same time - by other composers*es. Sometimes they knew Schubert's version, sometimes not, but they did originate in the same year, such as Carl Loewes Erlkönig and songs by Fanny Mendelssohn. Led by soprano Ellen Valkenburg and pianist Maurice Lammerts van Bueren, the singers*essen will work on two songs in a private and this public master class.
The masterclass will conclude on Sunday 25 May with a presentation recital.

Ellen Valkenburg / soprano
Ellen Valkenburg studied at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, where she completed her bachelor with distinction 'for authenticity in the choice and performance of the programme'. At the same conservatoire, she completed her master's degree in 2014. In 2012, she was awarded the Margit Widlund Stipendium, which is intended for young singers with exceptional stage presence. As a soloist, she sang with the Residentie Orkest, several oratorio companies and gave concerts for the Nederlandse Reisopera.
For several years, she has formed a duo with pianist Maurice Lammerts van Bueren. With him and four other singers, she is part of the Coco Collective. With Lammerts van Bueren, she also recorded the successful CD Les Apaches with Spanish- and French-language repertoire that received rave reviews.
Maurice Lammerts van Bueren / piano
Pianist Maurice Lammerts van Bueren graduated with Jan Wijn at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and subsequently obtained the chamber music endorsement. He was taught song accompaniment by Graham Johnson and Rudolf Jansen, among others. Before dedicating himself wholeheartedly to song accompaniment, he was mainly active as a chamber musician. Lammerts van Bueren collaborated with many instrumentalists and singers such as Henk Neven, Ellen Valkenburg and Lilian Farahani. He has since recorded eighteen CDs, including the 2022 double album 57 MAZURKI featuring all of Chopin's mazurkas.
