Sing Your Song is a unique project for Stichtse Vrije School students with Music as their final exam subject. Led by Anne-Maartje Lemereis (Composer of the Netherlands) and colleague Remy Alexander they learned to compose in workshops on basic technique, lyrics, voice types and musical notation. They wrote their song, received feedback and rehearsed its performance. On Sunday afternoon 25 May, they will sing their self-composed songs led by music teacher David Mulder in the Small Hall of the Evangelical Brethren Church.
Remy Alexander / composer
Remy Alexander studied composition at HKU Utrechts Conservatorium, Fontys Academy of the Arts and Royal Conservatoire The Hague and had lessons from Mayke Nas, Martijn Padding and Anthony Fiumara, among others. In 2018, he won the Tera de Marez Oyens prize during the Gaudeamus Music Week. He writes acoustic works and enjoys making combinations of acoustic ensembles and players, and electronic means.
Besides his work as a composer, Alexander organises educational projects on composing and improvising in collaboration with various festivals and organisations, and regularly gives guest lessons and workshops at conservatoires at home and abroad. He also designs new teaching methods and workshops on composing for schools and institutions. He is the education coordinator for November Music.
Anne-Maartje Lemereis / composer
Anne-Maartje Lemereis wrote her first composition when she was four years old and never stopped. She studied piano and composition and currently works as a composer, pianist, teacher and organiser. Lemereis has written compositions commissioned by various musicians and ensembles, and can regularly be heard as a pianist with her own work performed with other musicians. She also teaches composition and music theory and is a mentor, study coach and research supervisor at the HKU Utrechts Conservatorium. With composer Remy Alexander, she provides composition education to children as young as four through Stichting In de Knop. In 2015, she started a neighbourhood orchestra in Amersfoort in which everyone can play regardless of level. Since January 2024, Anne-Maartje has been the Composer of the Netherlands for two years.
