Public master class for advanced amateur duos (singer*es-pianist*e) led by. Ellen Valkenburg and Maurice Lammerts van Bueren. Registration is possible until Sunday 15 March.

In many of Edward Hopper's paintings, you can see where nature ends and the man-made world begins. At that interface, nature and man touch. A great example is the work Cape Cod Morning: a woman looks through the bay window at green trees and waving grass. The image evokes loneliness, but also a yearning for the freedom of nature, without the boundaries man-made. You can also find this theme in the lied, for example in Jake Heggies El Hombre (Tamayo) in which sounds ‘There are no borders in the sky’.

During this master class for advanced amateur duos (singer*es-pianist*e), we will explore liederences in which man and nature touch each other. What does it mean when man touches nature? And how does nature touch man? There are endless liederen in which nature touches man emotionally, sometimes with far-reaching consequences, feelings of fear or, on the contrary, comforting. And of course, nature can also make us happy or have human traits in which we see ourselves.

When choosing the repertoire you want to work on, you may let your imagination run wild. Also consider liederen from the 20th and 21st centuries. Your duo will choose one or two liederen. In one private and two public master classes you will work with Ellen Valkenburg, Maurice Lammerts van Bueren or both. After the last master class, the presentation will take place on Wednesday 20 May in the Kleine Zaal. You will introduce your chosen liederen, briefly explain why they fit the theme, and perform them as a duo.

Sign up as a duo (singer*es-pianist*e) by no later than Sunday 15 March send an e-mail to educatie@ilfz.nl. In it, mention which two liederen you would like to work on, stating:

  • the title of the lied
  • the name of the composer

Together, the liederen may last a maximum of 9 minutes.

Don't forget to include the name and contact details (e-mail address and phone number) of both the singer*es and the pianist*es. Placement is in order of entry.

Ellen Valkenburg / soprano

Ellen Valkenburg studied at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, where she completed her bachelor with distinction ‘for authenticity in the choice and performance of the programme’. At the same conservatoire, she completed her master's degree in 2014. In 2012, she was awarded the Margit Widlund Stipendium, which is intended for young singers with exceptional stage presence. As a soloist, she sang with the Residentie Orkest and several oratorio companies. She also gave concerts for the Dutch Travel Opera.
For several years, she has formed a duo with pianist Maurice Lammerts van Bueren. With him and four other singers, she is part of the Coco Collective. With Lammerts van Bueren, she also made the successful CD Les Apaches with Spanish- and French-language repertoire, which was very well received.

Maurice Lammerts van Bueren / piano

Pianist Maurice Lammerts van Bueren graduated with Jan Wijn at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and subsequently obtained the chamber music endorsement. He was taught lied accompaniment by Graham Johnson and Rudolf Jansen, among others. Before devoting himself wholeheartedly to lied accompaniment, he was mainly active as a chamber musician. Lammerts van Bueren collaborated with many instrumentalists and singers such as Henk Neven, Ellen Valkenburg and Lilian Farahani. He has since recorded eighteen CDs, including the double album 57 MAZURKI with all of Chopin's mazurkas in 2022.
He is also a coach at the vocal department of the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and has given lessons and master classes in lied coaching at the Utrecht Conservatoire and ArtEZ conservatoire as a guest teacher.
